Before coming to France
A visa application is mandatory, either through the Campus France website (if your country is part of the Campus France/Studies in France program) or directly with the nearest French Consulate (see the Campus France website). For students not residing in their country of origin, visa applications must be submitted to the French consulate in their country of residence.
• Once in France, and depending on the visa you received
- The “CESEDA R311-3-6” Student Visa (also known as VLS-TS valid for 3 months before renewal), is issued to students coming for an academic year, and sometimes for a semester. Mandatory procedures upon arrival in France to obtain an extension include payment of the official fee (€60 in 2024) and an interview with the OFII. With this visa, you can apply for CAF housing benefits and work in France (up to 60% of the legal working hours).
- The “Temporary Long Stay” visa (VLS-T), is generally issued to students coming to stay for a semester. There are no specific procedures to follow once in France, but students are not entitled to apply for housing benefits from the CAF and are not authorized to work.
